pretty petals – poppy pods

August 7, 2014

Poppies are a magnificent flower.  But did you know that in the floral industry we enjoy a poppy once it has gone to seed as well?  These goofy looking pods are a neat way to add interest to a floral design.  We use them when they are fresh or enjoy them as a dried pod as well.  If the pod is left in the garden to dry completely, the seeds loosen and you can hear them bouncing around inside. Eventually, the pod will split open, leaving a trail of seeds in the garden for this biennial plant to flourish the following summer.

Am I the only one that thinks that these funny little pods look like a Timothy Burton character?  Quick, someone get me a Sharpie!
