pretty petals – cafe au lait dahlias

September 18, 2014

Dahlias are magical flowers, but oh my, you haven’t experienced real beauty until you hold a cafe au lait dahlia in your hands!  These over sized blooms are magnificent.  Often referred to as dinner plate dahlias, the cafe au lait can grow as big as 11 inches in diameter.  A single plant can produce multiple shades including:  creamy pink, blush, peach, ivory, champagne, and dusty rose.  We were pretty excited this summer to grow cafe au lait dahlias in the Living Fresh cutting garden with great success.

Dahlias thrive in our Ontario climate.  They are a tuber that must be planted only once the threat of all frost has passed, and they must be dug up in the fall and stored indoors in a cool, dry spot over winter.  Cafe au lait is a tough tuber to find since their rise in popularity.  Brides want them!  We suggest pre-ordering them online for spring delivery. The are priced from $3-5 per tuber.
